US Online Gambling Update
There has recently been a change of opinion from the United States Department of Justice. The issue in question is how the Wire Act of 1961 affects various forms of online gambling. The Department of Justice has explained that its legal counsel has looked more carefully at the Wire Act, and is of the opinion that the act is not about all forms of online gambling, and only about sports gambling. Up until now, the federal authorities in the United States used the Wire Act to prohibit all forms of online gambling. The Wire Act was not used in isolation since the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) has effectively rendered online gambling illegal in the United States since it bans all online gambling transactions. However, many of the prohibitions to do with online gambling in the US have recently been connected to the Wire Act. The statement from the United States Department of Justice included the following: The Department of Justices view is and has been for some time that all forms of Internet gambling, including sports wagering, casino games and card games, are illegal under federal law. While many of the federal statutes do not use the term Internet gambling, we believe that the statutory language is sufficient to cover it. The statement further noted: The Criminal Divisions premise is incorrect and that the Wire Act prohibits only the transmission of communications related to bets or wagers on sporting events or contests.” While this will affect how online gambling is looked at in a legal sense, there are other issues that need to be addressed. For example, the American Gaming Association is still of the opinion that online gambling needs to be regulated and legalized on a federal level. Tesco have added the iPhone 4S to its website and unveiled the pricing on its network. The big news is that Tesco Mobile are offering the iPhone 4S on 12 month contracts which a lot of people still favour. With the iPhone 5 expected to be unveiled next year it might well be a good idea to take out a shorter contract. However, you’ll incur larger up-front costs for the iPhone 4S on 12 month deals but the lowest priced tariffs starts at just 25 a month. That’ll get you 250 minutes, 5000 texts, 1GB of data and unlimited BT OpenZone WiFi. An iPhone 4S 16GB on the 25 a month tariff will cost you 335 up-front , while a 32GB and 64GB will set you back 425 and 495 respectively. Tesco are also offering the iPhone 4S on 24 month deals where you can get the 16GB version free on a contract costing 45 a month. For your money you get 3,000 minutes, 5,000 texts , 1GB of data and unlimited WiFi. On the same deal a 32GB iPhone will cost 50 up-front, while the 64GB model will be 120. The 12 month deals will suit some people and give Tesco a unique selling point, but the 24 month deals are only equal to the other major operators and we’d prefer Three’s One Plan over Tesco’s deal.

If everything goes as planned in Nevada, there is an online gambling company based in Ireland that is trying to be the first European gaming operator licensed in the state. Paddy Power is looking to get approval from the Nevada gaming regulators for a license as a manufacturer and operator of mobile gaming devices. They already operate online gambling sites in Australia and across Europe. Paddy Power sites has never excepted U.S players or wagers which may give it an edge as it tries to get approval in Nevada. A lot of things have to happen of course before Paddy Power or anyone else gets approval to operate an online poker site in Nevada, the biggest of course is getting the federal government to legalize and regulate online gambling. Paddy Power filed for a Nevada license in August of this year and could be licensed by Nevada gaming officials by November. The agenda for the November meeting has not been set however and according to Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli however and there are no plans to set the agenda till 6 days before hand. If approved Paddy Power would head straight to the front of the class as far as being immediately being able to operate an online poker site based in Nevada.
